Program Overview:
Through an analysis of closed OMSNIC medical professional liability claims and the litigation process, this course will provide strategies and resources to reduce risk in the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice and improve defensibility in oral surgery-related professional liability claims. Closed claim topics will include alveolar surgery, implants, orthognathic and trauma cases, cosmetic cases, and those procedures involving advanced anesthesia. Risk management topics include documentation, communication, informed consent, and patient selection.
Course Objectives:
- Identify common medical professional liability risks specific to oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
- Understand the litigation process and the role of the insured, defense counsel, and insurance carrier in this process.
- Formulate policies and procedures to assist in improving patient safety and the defensibility of a potential claim.
- Relate communication and documentation strategies to support patient safety.
- Discuss current and emerging trends related to risk management in the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty.
Speaker Bios:
Dr. Goldberg is the Education Program Developer at OMSNIC and Fortress Insurance. Julie received her dental degree from the University of Illinois and is a licensed dentist in both Illinois and Florida. She is a Chicago area native who has been in private practice in Illinois as well as in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area, and currently maintains membership with the ADA as well as the Chicago Dental Society. Julie brings her clinical dental experience and knowledge to the Patient Safety and Risk Management Department. Dr. Goldberg has nothing to disclose.
Dr. Sabino is a Board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who practices in Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She completed her undergraduate training at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN before receiving her Doctor in Dental Surgery degree at the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry. She then completed her residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of WI where she joined the faculty and became Program Director until 2015. She is now Chief of Dentistry at the William S. Middleton VA Hospital and Clinics and is the OMS Consultant to the National VA Office of Dentistry in Washington DC. She continues to remain active in several AAOMS committees and is currently a member of the OMSNIC Patient Safety and Risk Management Committee. Dr. Sabino has nothing to disclose.
