Event Overview for Dr. Woo

This talk will discuss the effective use of topical and injectable medications, as well as the use of systemic therapies to manage a variety of mucosa diseases such as lichen planus, oral ulcers, and leukoplakia.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the importance of clinico-pathologic correlations in establishing a diagnosis of mucosal disease.
  • To know the classes of topical steroids and how to prescribe and use them for the long-term management of chronic mucosal disease.
  • To be aware of new classes of medications now used to treat mucosal disease, including biologics and topical immune-modulating medications. 

Event Overview for Dr. Peacock

This will be a review of the management of benign maxillofacial cysts and tumors. Also, an update on surgical and medical management with the advancing genetic assessment of lesions faced by oral and maxillofacial surgeons will be presented.

  • To describe contemporary diagnosis and management of odontogenic cysts and tumors
  • To understand the genetic basis for odontogenic cysts and tumors
  • To describe existing and future medical treatment to lessen or avoid surgical treatment


Speaker Bios:

Dr. Sook-Bin Woo is a professor in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, a consultant and oral and maxillofacial pathologist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital, and an attending oral medicine specialist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She is director of the Center for Oral Pathology at StrataDx Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts, and program director for the advanced oral pathology training program at Harvard. She is board-certified in both oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine and is active in training residents and graduate students in both specialties.

She received the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2012. She has published more than 300 papers and book chapters including a textbook on Oral Pathology, the third edition of which was published in 2023. 


Dr. Zachary Peacock is the chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mass General and chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is also co-director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Center at Mass General for Children and Shriner's Hospital for Children - Boston.

Dr. Peacock completed his undergraduate work at Michigan State University before receiving his DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He graduated summa cum laude, ranking first in his class. He then received his MD and completed residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Peacock then completed the Mass General Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship.

His clinical interests are in orthognathic surgery, pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, cleft lip and palate, and dentoalveolar surgery including dental implants. His research interests include orthognathic surgery and benign pathology of the maxillofacial region. He has served as chair of the research committee for AAOMS and currently serves as an executive board member in AACMFS, JOMS editorial board, and ABOMS examination committee.
