Event Overview:

This talk will cover the diagnosis, workup and treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. Unique populations of children with micrognathia, maxillary hypoplasia, and other facial differences will be discussed, and the roles for maxillofacial surgery and orthodontic/orthopedic interventions will be emphasized.

Learning Objectives:

The learner will be able to describe the most common causes of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

The learner will be able to describe the benefits and limitations of orthodontic/orthopedic appliances in management of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

The learner will be able to describe the roles for hard and soft tissue-based operations in management of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

The learner will be able to describe priorities in balancing surgical care and growth considerations in children with obstructive sleep apnea.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Resnick is an Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Harvard Medical School. He practices pediatric oral and craniomaxillofacial surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital with an emphasis on craniofacial anomalies and syndromes, orthognathic surgery, management of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, and the surgical management of pediatric temporomandibular joint disorders. Dr. Resnick is the Director of Clinical Operations for the Boston Children’s Hospital multi-disciplinary Craniofacial Team and the Director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Chigurupati is an Associate Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Chigurupati specializes in surgical reconstruction of developmental and acquired jaw and facial deformities. Her primary focus in clinical practice is pediatric maxillofacial surgery. Her clinical expertise is surgical management of craniofacial growth disturbances, tooth eruption disturbances, and jaw tumors in children. She also provides consultation for adults with sleep disorders/ obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), maxillofacial injuries, and pathology of the jaws and mouth. She works with her colleagues in other medical and dental specialties to provide interdisciplinary care for these patients. She and her surgery associates consult and provide surgical care for patients at Boston Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Her current research focuses on identifying solutions for early diagnosis of oral cancer in resource-restricted settings and obstructive sleep apnea.
